Abstract

It was conducted to answer the following questions:(1)Is talking chips technique effective to improve speaking skill of the eighth grade students of SMPN5 Kota Kupang in the school year 2017/2018? (2)To what extent is the improvement of speaking skill of the eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Kota Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 after being taught using talking chips technique?The objectives of the study are: (1)To know the effectiveness of talking chips in improving speaking skill of the eighth students of SMPN 5 Kota Kupang in the school year 2017/2018.(2)To know extent the improvement of speaking skill of the eighth grade students after being taught using talking chips technique. The subject of this study were the eighth grade students in class VIII C. The total number of the students was 20 and the writer choose 10 students to be the respondents of this study. In collecting the data, the writer gave a topic that the writer prepared. The result of the research shows that (1) The use of Talking Chips technique in teaching speaking is effective for the eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Kota Kupang. (2) The improvement of students’ speaking skill are getting better after being taught using Talking Chips technique and the level of speaking skill of the eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Kota kupang is High Advance (5.33). Based on the result of this study, the writer would like to offer some suggestions as follows: (1) The teacher should apply the Talking Chips technique in teaching speaking because by using talking chips the students can try and have the chance to speak English more intensively. The students will have the confident to speak English when they have the challenge in speaking in classroom (2)Learning English is actually fun. Therefore, in learning English the students should have the motivation in themselves so they can active in studying
