Abstract
This study was held to find the answer of three questions namely, (1) Are the eleventh grade students of SMA Katolik Sint Carolus Penfui-Kupang able to write a narrative paragraph based on picture clue? (2) What is the student level of ability in writing narrative paragraph based on picture clue? (3)What are the difficulties faced by the students in writing narrative paragraph? The objectives of the study are to find out and to know whether or not the eleventh grade students of SMA Katolik Sint Carolus Penfui- Kupang in the academic year 2013/2014 are able to write narrative paragraph based on the picture clue, their level of ability and to know difficulties faced by the students in writing narrative paragraph. To answer accurately the problems above, descriptive method was employed in this research to describe the student’s ability to write narrative paragraph based on the picture clue. In order support this research, the writer used some books that are related to the core of this writing. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMA Katolik Sint Carolus Penfui-Kupangin the academic year 2013/2014. The total number of them is 49. However, by using purposive sampling the writer only chose the natural science class consists of 17 students to become the respondents of this study. The instrument used for this research was test that based on the pictures clue. The data were collected and analyzed. The analysis is focused on grammar, vocabulary and form. Based on the result of the analysis, the writer concluded that the eleventh grade students of SMA Katolik Sint Carolus Penfui Kupang in the academic year 2013/2014 are able to write narrative paragraph based on the picture clue. Their level of ability is classified as “Average”. The difficulties faced are on the grammar (sentence patterns, tense, word order), vocabulary (diction), mechanic (spelling,) and form (organization of ideas). The result of this study indicated that there is no student who got highest score 18 (Excellent) with 0%, 9 students who got score 15-17 (Very good) with 52.9%, 5 students who got score 12-14 (Above Average) with 29.4 %, 4 students who got score 9-11 (Average) with 11.76%, and there is no student who got score 6-8 and 3-5 (Below Average and Bad) with 0%. The English teachers should emphasize and drill the students concerning the use of grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, spelling, capitalization beside the coherence and unity in organizing a piece of written task.
