Abstract

The study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) who is more dominant in conversation based on the gender of the eleventh grade students in SMA Negeri 6 Kupang? (2) who is more dominant from male group and who is more dominant from female group in conversation based on the topic control of the eleventh grade students in SMA Negeri 6 Kupang? The objectives of this studying are (1) to find out and to know who is more dominant in conversation based on the gender, (2) to find out and to know who is more dominant from male and female group in conversation based on the topic control. The method used in this writing was descriptive quantitative. The study was conducted at SMA Negeri 6 Kupang particularly the Eleventh grade students of the school. There were 14 students, divided of two class program, science and language class programs. Based on the English teacher information and student’s ability record, 7 male and 7 female were chosen as the subject of the study. They were divided into three groups, consisting of Male Group, Female Group and Mixed Group. In collecting the data, there were three topics to be chosen by the students to make their conversation. The instrument used in this writing was conversation that was recorded using digital camera. Based on the data analysis, the dominance in the conversation was related to amount of talk, interruptions and the turn taking. The topic control can be concluded from the amount of talk and turn taking of each person. The members of the group conversation that have more turn taking than the others control the topic in the conversation. In the mixed group, male were dominating than female because male students produced 27 sentences in amount of talk and also 10 turns while female produced 11 sentences and 4 turns, whereas in interruptions female were dominating. In male group conversation, male 1 was more dominant because male 1 produced 29 sentences in amount of talk and also 10 turns taking from 33 turns in conversation. In the female’s group conversation, female 2 was more dominant because female 2 produced 28 sentences in amount of talk and 7 turns taking from 19 turns in conversation. Therefore, the writer suggested to the English teacher of SMA Negeri 6 Kupang to give more time to the students to practice free conversation and to perform conversation in order to achieve a more balanced conversation, in terms of amount of talk and turn taking.
