Abstract
Realistic mathematics learning is an approach in mathematics learning which has the characteristics of using contextual problems, using models, using student contributions, linking between mathematical topics and the occurrence of interactions in the learning process. The mathematical communication ability is the ability to express ideas about the concept of mathematics subject matter learned by indicators communicating situations in everyday life in language, symbol, ideas, mathematical models, writing thought ideas in the the form of mathematical writing, evaluating and analyzing and completing math problem. This study aims to improve students mathematical communication skills in realistic mathematics learning. This research was carried out in class IX G of state 20 junior high school for odd semester of 2018/2019 academic year. The subjects of this study were 3 students in one class with high, medium and low ability, selected based on a mathematical communication ability test. Of the 3 subjects were given problem solving and interview tests to determine the improvement of studentsâ€™ mathematical communication skills in realistic mathematics learning. The method used in this research is qualitative method. The type of research approach is descriptive. The result showed that subjects with high ability after being given a mathematical communication ability test were able to answer and solve problems. After being given a problem solving test and interview, this subject is able to understand and work on problem solving test questions, fulfill each indicator and be able to maintain good mathematical communication skills. Subject with moderate ability after being given a mathematical communiction ability test, were able to understand and work on mathematical communication ability test questions on problem number 1 but were unable to understand and work on problem number 2. After being given problem solving and interview tests, these subject were able to understand and work on test questions problem solving and meeting each indicator. Subject with moderate ability have improved mathematical communication skills. Subject with low ability were not able to complete the test questions on mathematical communication skills. After being given problem solving and interview tests, these subject are able to understand and work on problem solving test questions and fulfill each indicator. Subject with low ability have improved mathematical communication skills.
