Abstract
This study is entitled “A Study on the Ability in Translating Indonesian Text into English of the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the School Year 2018/2019”. It was conducted to answer the following questions: (a) Is the translation of Indonesian text into English of the Eight Grade Students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang in translating good or bad? (b) What are the areas of difficulties in translating Indonesian text into English encountered by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang? The objectives of the study are as follows (a) To know whether the translation of Indonesian text into English of the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang in translating good or bad. (b) To find out the areas of difficulties in translating Indonesian text into English encountered by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang. To do this study the writer used the descriptive method. The subject of the study was the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019. The writer chose class A. The total number of the students was 27 and the writer took 20 students as the respondents. The reason of choosing this class was because the students in this class had sufficient knowledge of English based on the information of their English teacher. The instrument used in this research was translation task. The writer gave the students a text of Descriptive text written in Indonesian language and the students translated it into English. The text entitled “ Sahabat Terbaikku, Anita”, consists of 19 sentences written in Indonesian. The text was translated by the subject of this study. Based on the result of analysis, the conclusions of this study are: 1) the student’s translation is classified as bad. 2) The areas of difficulties encountered by eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in translating Indonesian text into English are grammar and vocabulary. The grammatical problems encountered are tenses, pronoun, article, preposition and plural/singular. While the vocabulary problems lie on the word choice which is sometimes done wrongly and it influences the content of the translation. Based on the result of this study, some suggestions are presented as follows: (1) For the English teacher, by knowing the result of the study then English teachers particularly the English teachers of SMPN 10 Kupang are expected, to pay attention intensively to the grammar and vocabulary when teaching so that the students can minimize all difficulties regarding grammar and vocabulary. (2) For the students, through the result of the study students specifically students of SMPN 10 Kupang are expected to enrich themselves concerning knowledge of English by sharpening their English proficiency.
