Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON THE ABILITY IN USING QUESTION TAG OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 5 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2018/2019”. The statement of the problems are formulated as follows: 1) What level of ability do the eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang have in using “Question Tag”?, 2) What is the area of difficulties in using “Question Tag” of the eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang? The main objective of this study are to find out their level of ability in using question tag, and to find out the areas of difficulties they encounter. The data were obtained through the test. The obtained data were analyzed through steps of correcting, scoring, and tabulating. The result of the analysis shows that the students were able to use question tag and it can be seen through the grades. Four (20%) students are at the level of “excellent”, four (20%) students are at the level of “very good”, six (30%) students are at the level of “ good”, three (15%) students are at the level of “ fairly good”, two (10%) students are at the level of “average”, an one ( 5%) student is at the level of “bellow average”. Thus the student’s level of ability in using question tag is “good” (8.095). The test items that are taken as the example of explaining the areas of difficulties are the ones that more than 10 (50%) students who answer incorrectly. Such test items include numbers 19, 20 of Test 1. The explanation of Test 1 is presented in the following. It starts from number 19. The correct answer for number 19 is does he. It means that 10 students don’t know how to form question tag in correct. The correct answer for number 20 is didn’t she. It means that 10 students don’t know how to form the question tag in simple past tenses .Furthermore, The explanation of Test 2 is presented in the following. It stars from number 2. The correct answer for number 2 is aren’t they. It means that 10 students don’t know how to form question tag in correct. The correct answer for number 3 is isn’t he. It means that 10 students don’t know how to form question tag in correct. The correct answer for number 4 is aren’t you. It means that 10 students don’t know how to form question tag in correct. The correct answer for number 5 is isn’t she. It means that 10 students don’t know how to form question tag in correct. The correct answer for number 7 is can’t we. It means that 10 students don’t know how to for question tag in correct. The correct answer for number 8 is isn’t it. It means that 10 students don’t know how to form question tag in correct. The correct answer for number 9 is aren’t they. It means that 10 students don’t know how to for question tag in correct. The correct answer for number 10 is aren’t i. It means that 10 students don’t know how to form question tag in correct. the areas of difficulties of the eighth grades students of SMPN 5 Kupang is the form of question tag and the rules of using question tag. Based on the result of study, the writer would like to purpose the following suggestion to the English teacher of SMPN 5 Kupang to pay attention and to give more exercises about question tags so the students can improve their knowledge of question tag.
