Abstract

This thesis is entitled “A STUDY ON THE STUDENTS’ GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 7 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2015/2016”. It was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) What are the kinds of grammatical errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in writing descriptive text? (2) What are the most common grammatical errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in writing descriptive text? Based on the problems stated above, the objectives of the study are as follows: (1) to find out the kinds of the grammatical errors commited by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in writing descriptive text. (2) to find out the most grammatical errors commited by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in the school year 2015/2016. The total number of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang is 304 students. They were divided into 9 classes. The writer chose science class consisted of 35 students and the writer used the data from 20 students who were chosen randomly. The students were given chance to write descriptive text based on their own topic. The taxonomy used by the writer in analyzing the data was surface strategy taxonomy, consisting of omission, addition, misordering and misformation. After analyzing and discussing about students error in their writing descriptive text, the writer can conclude that: 1. The types of errors made by the students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 were Misformation, Omission, Addition, Misordering. It means that most of the students made errors in grammar. 2. The frequency of errors in grammar was omission with 45 errors (47.87%). Followed by misformation with 36 errors (38.29%), addition with 9 errors (9.57%), Misordering with 4 errors (4.25%). The most frequent errors is omission. Based on the result of this study, the following are the suggestions. For the teacher: the teacher should teach and give more grammar drills to reduce students’ errors and also the teacher gives the students chance to learn more about good text and focus on grammar especially tenses and subject verb agreement and pronoun. For the Writer :The writer has to think how to make teaching and learning process of writing descriptive text becomes interesting but keeps focus in writing structurally or grammatically. Also the writer is encouraged to learn the grammatical of English. For the Students: The students should learn how to write a good text and focused on grammar especially tenses and subject verb agreement.
