Abstract

This study is entitled Terms of Address of West Manggarai Dialect of Manggarai Language Spoken in Komodo Subdistrict. This research was conducted by Quintinus Rival Hanusi with Reg. No. 12115021 under the supervision of Dr. Drs. Kletus Erom and Father Paul Asa, SVD, M.ag. TESOL. M.Pd. Furthermore, this study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1)What are kinds of terms of address of West Manggarai Dialect of Mangarai Language Spoken in Komodo Subdistict? (2) What are social factors using certain terms of address in West Mangarai Dialect of Mangarai Language spoken in Komodo Subdistrict? (3)What are functions of address terms using by people of Komodo Subdistrict? The objectives of this study are (1) To find out kinds of terms of address of West Manggarai Dialect of Manggarai Languge spoken in Komodo Subdistrict. (2) To describe the social factors of using certain address terms in West Manggarai Dialect of Manggaai Language spoken Komodo Subdistrict. (3) To reveal the functions of using address terms in West Manggarai Dialect of Manggarai Language spoken in Komodo Subdistrict. The study was conducted in Sokrutung village, Komodo Subdistrict, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. Due to qualitative study the data were obtained through interview. The data were analyzed through some steps: Replaying, Transcribing, and translating by gloss into English. In the line with the problem statement, it was found that terms of address of West Manggarai Dialect of Manggarai Language spoken in Komodo Subdistrict are influenced by some types of address terms, social factors and functions. There are three types of address terms used in West Manggarai Dialect of Manggarai Language spoken Komodo Subdistrict. They are title such as Romo ‘Prist’, Pa Camat ‘Subdistrict Head’, pet name such as Dami becomes Mamik, Rolan becomes Nggolang, and kinship term such as Ame ‘Father’, Ine ‘Mother’, Empo Ine ‘Grandmother’, Empo Ame ‘Grandfather’. Furthermore, the social factors are divided into seven. They are particular occasion, rank of other/social status, age, family relationship, gender, transactional status, and degree of intimacy. Related to the third problem, there are three functions of address terms. They are to show intimacy, power differential, and respect. The finding on the use of address terms in this research, especially in the types, functions, and social factors of address terms are influenced by context of communication. For example, where the conversation takes place or to whom a speaker talks to. Place or circumstance can greatly influence the use of certain types of address term. A formal occasion usually also requires formal language during conversation. The people of Komodo Subdistrict are suggested to keep speaking their language and its terms of address to keep better social relationship in daily communication.
