It was conducted in order to answer the following questions: (1) Are the translations made by the eleventh grade students of SMK Lamaholot Larantuka good or bad? (2) What are the areas of difficulties in translating a short story from Bahasa Indonesia into English encountered by the eleventh grade students of SMK Swasta Lamaholot Larantuka? The objectives of the study are as follows (1) To know whether the translations of short story made by eleventh grade students of SMK Swasta Lamaholot Larantuka are good or bad? (2) To identify and explain the area of difficulties encountered by the eleventh grade students of SMK Lamaholot in translating short story from Bahasa Indonesia into English. The writer used qualitative method to describe students’ translations. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMK Swasta Lamaholot Larantuka in the school year 2015-2016. There were 29 students as the subject. In collecting data, the writer gave a test in form of the text that the writer prepared. The text consists of 16 sentences written in Bahasa Indonesia and should be translated by the students into English. The text is entitled “ Sarah dan Sebuah Melon Besar”. The result of this study shows that from the total of 464 sentences produced by the students only 129 (27.80%) are Good sentences and the Bad sentences are 335 (72.19%). So, the conclusions of this study are: 1) the students’ translation is classified as bad. 2) the difficulties faced by the students were lack of vocabulary or lexicon and grammatical structure of English: tenses, preposition, article and the wrong use of personal pronoun. Therefore, here the writer would like to offer some suggestions as follows: (1) The English teacher of the eleventh grade students of SMK Swasta Lamaholot Larantuka is expected to focus on grammar particularly the use of tenses, personal pronoun and preposition, and give more translation exercises for the students to improve their grammar and vocabulary. (2) The students are suggested to learn English Grammar, vocabulary and practise translation from Bahasa Indonesia into English.
