Abstract

This thesis is entitled “An Analysis On Grammatical Errors In Writing Descriptive Text Of The Eighth-Grade Students Of SMPN 10 Kupang In The School Year 2019/2020”. It is conducted to answer the following questions: (1) What are the kinds of grammatical errors committed by the eighth-grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 in writing descriptive text? (2) What is the most common error committed by the eighth-grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 in writing descriptive text? Based on the problems stated above, the objectives of the study are: (1) To find out the kinds of grammatical error committed by the eighth-grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in writing descriptive text, and (2) To find out the most common error in writing descriptive text committed by the eighth-grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang. The subject of this study was 20 students of class F at SMPN 10 Kupang. In collecting the data, the writer used descriptive method. The purpose of this method is to describe the errors made by students. The students were given the chance to make their own descriptive text based on the topics prepared. And also, the writer gave them the chance to choose their own topic in writing descriptive text. The taxonomy used by the writer in analyzing the data was surface strategy taxonomy that consists of some categories, such as omission, addition, misformation and misordering. Based on the result of the analysis, it can be seen that (1) the total number of grammatical erros made by students in constructing descriptive text is 81 (100%). Most of students made errors in misformation with the total number of error is 42 (52%), omission error is 20 (25%), addition error is 11 (13%) and misordering error is 8 (10%). (2) the most common error was misformation error because the total number of it was 42 (52%). Based on the result of this study, the writer suggests the teacher that she or he should teach the students how to create a good text in English, especially descriptive text. And before that, the teacher should teach the students about the subject and verb agreement, how to make good sentences based on the tenses used, and the teacher should give the students chance to practice it, while for the students, they are expected to study more on English grammar especially subject and verb agreement.
