Abstract
This study is entitled Ability in Using Preposition of Place ofthe Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in the School Year 2018/2019. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang able to use preposition of place? (2) What is the level of ability of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in using preposition of place? (3) What are the areas of difficulties encountered by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in using preposition of place?The objectives of the study are: (1) To find out whether the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 are able to use preposition of place. (2) To find out the eighth grade students’ levels of ability in using preposition of place. (3) To find out the areas of difficulties that might be encountered by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in using preposition of place. In this study the writer used normative survey method because the ability level of the students in using preposition of place is obtained through correction and quantification of the data in form of answer sheets of the students. The study was conducted in SMP Negeri 5 Kupang. The instrument used in getting the data was a test consisting of multiple choice tests, and sentence completion with the total number of test items was 40. The result of the study shows that (1) The eighth grade students of SMP Negeri Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 are not able to use the preposition of place (2) The level ability of the students in using preposition of place is 4.80 which is classified as below average (3) the difficulties faced by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in using preposition of place are below, beside, and under while the prepositions of place which are easy for the students comprise at, between, opposite. Based on the result of the study, the writer would like to give some suggestion for the English teacher and the students in researched school, (1) For the English teacher in order to improve the students ability in using preposition of place the teacher should give the students explanations and practice more about how to use prepositions in sentences until they master it. (2) The students are expected to do more exercises about the use of preposition in sentences.
