Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON THE ABILITY IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPK STA. MARIA ASSUMPTA KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2018 / 2019”. It was conducted to answer the following questions; (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMPK Sta. Maria Assumpta Kupang able to write a descriptive text or not? (2) What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK Sta. Maria Assumpta Kupang in the school year 2018 / 2019 in writing descriptive text? The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of this method is to give or explain a situation which is observed while this research done. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPK Sta. Maria Assumpta Kupang (class VIII A). The total number of class VIII A was 27 students but the writer only chose 20 students randomly as the sample of this study. The instrument used in this study was writing task (write a descriptive text). The collected data were analyzed on three aspects of writing, namely; grammar, vocabulary and form. The result of this study shows that: (1) The eighth grade students of SMPK Sta. Maria Assumpta Kupang are able to write descriptive text with the level of ability was classified as “VERY GOOD” (13.5). (2) That there 1 students (5%) getting the highest score 16-18 (excellent). There were 4 students (20%) getting score10-12 (good), and 15 students (75%) getting score 13-15 (Very good). While there were no students getting average, below average and bad. Based on the result above the writer suggests the following this: (1) the students of SMPK Sta. Maria Assumpta Kupang need to enrich themselves by mastering English vocabulary more in order to write a descriptive text. (2) Grammatical rule is another important thing they have to master. The students need to know the grammatical rules in writing descriptive text.
