Abstract

This study is entitled “A Study on The Effectiveness of Using Mind Mapping Technique to Improve Descriptive Writing Ability of The Eighth Grade Students Of SMPN Moru in the School Year 2017/ 2018”. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Is Mind Mapping Technique effective to improve the descriptive writing ability of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri Moru in the School years 2017/2018? (2) How is mind mapping technique used to improve the descriptive writing ability of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri Moru in the School years 2017/2018? While the objective of the study are (1) To find out the effectiveness of Mind Mapping to improve descriptive writing ability of the eighth grade students of SMP N Moru in the School years 2017/2018. (2) To find out how Mind Mapping Technique used to improve descriptive writing ability of the eighth grade students of SMP N Moru in the School years 2017/2018. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri Moru in the school year 2017/2018. They are distributed in six classes: 8A-8F. Each class consists of 25 students. The total of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri Moru is 150 students. The writer took only one class of the eighth grade of SMP Negeri Moru, it was class VIII A with 25 students, but when the writer doing the research only 19 students who were present. This study was conducted in two cycles. The instruments used in this study were test, lesson plans and observation sheet. There were three tests conducted in this study, they were pre-test, post-test I and post-test II. The methods used in this study were quantitative (Ability test) and qualitative (Observation sheet). The result of the study shows that (1) mind mapping technique is effective to improve descriptive writing ability of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri Moru in the school year 2017/2018 is effective. It was shown by the score of pre-test (9), post-test I (10.6) and post-test II (14.3). It means that there is improvement of students’ writing ability after taught them using mind mapping technique. (2) Mind mapping technique can be used to improve writing ability to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri Moru. Mind Mapping was conducted in two cycles. In first cycle, the researcher explained about mind mapping, the definition of mind mapping and how to make a mind map and also the researcher explained how to using mind mapping in descriptive text. In the second cycle, the researcher just explained again about mind mapping to the students. Based on the result can be concluded that teaching learning process in mind mapping technique was implied well and the students can get many benefit. The situation during teaching learning process was conducive, lively, and active. Based on the result of the study the following are some suggestions that needed to be considered: (1) For the English teacher are highly recommended to use mind mapping technique as one technique to help the students’ perfom better on writing ability. (2) For the Students, Students should stimulate themselves to learn English especially writing. They should get involved actively in the activities during the lesson and finish the task well. They must also do more practices especially for writing English and lesson either in school or at home. In practicing to write the students may used mind mapping as the technique x to developing the idea. (3) For the Writer, the writer will become an educator and since this study showed a possitive result he decided to continue to use mind map with any necessary adjustment his profesional career as a teacher later and shares it with other especially in his future students.
