(2) To find out the level of ability of the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in writing recount text. The method used in this study was descriptive method. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang (class VIIIE). The total number of class VIIIE was 20 but the writer only chose 10 students randomly as the sample of this study. The instrument used in this study was a writing test. The collected data were analyzed based on the five aspects of writing, namely; grammar, vocabulary, mechanics, fluency, and form. The result of this study shows that: (1) The eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 was able to write a recount text. (2) The level of ability was classified as “AVERAGE” (19.1).There is no student who gets the highest score 30 (Excellent) and 25 – 29 (Very Good). There are 6 students (60%) who get the score 20 – 24 (Good). There are 4 students (40%) who get score 15 – 19 (Average). There is no student who gets 10 – 14 (Below Average) and 5 – 9 (Bad). These scores were given by using analytic method offered by John Anderson. Although the level of writing ability of the students grammar, vocabulary, mechanics, fluency, and form is AVERAGE, there were still errors made by the students, they are Grammar, followed by vocabulary, diction, spelling and punctuation. Therefore, the writer suggests the teacher of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang to pay more attention on the teaching of grammar especially tenses (the use of to be) choice of word, punctuation and spelling which are appropriate, because many errors are found on these aspects.
