Abstract

This study is entitled “An Analysis on the ability in writing descriptive text of the eleventh grade students of SMAK SINT CAROLUS KUPANG in the school year 2018/2018”. It was conducted to answer the following questions; (1) are the eleventh grade students of SMAK SINT CAROLUS KUPANG in the school year 2018/2019 able to write descriptive text? (2) What is the ability level of eleventh grade students of SMAK SINT CAROLUS KUPANG in the school year 2017/2018 in writing descriptive text? (3) What are the difficulties of the eleventh grade students at SMAK SINT CAROLUS KUPANG in the academic year 2018 / 2019 in writing descriptive text? The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of this method is to give or explain a situation which is observed while this research was done. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMAK SINT CAROLUS KUPANG (class XI IPA II). The total number of class XI IPA II was 23 but the writer only chose 15 students randomly as the sample of this study. The instrument used in this study was writing task (writing a descriptive text). The collected data were analyzed on three aspects of writing, namely; grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. The result of this study show that the eighth grade students of SMAK SINT CAROLUS KUPANG are able to write descriptive text with the level of ability classified as “ Average” (11, 8). There is no student who gets the highest score of 18 (very good). There are 2 students get the score of 13 – 15 (good). There are 5 students getting 12-14 (above average), and there are 8 students getting 9-11 (average). While there is no student getting very good, below average and bad. These scores were gained by using analytic method offered by John Anderson. There were many errors made by the students, they are Grammar, followed by vocabulary, diction, mechanics. Therefore the writer suggests the teacher of SMAK SINT CAROLUS KUPANG to pay more attention on the teaching of grammar especially tenses (the use of to be), choice of word, mechanics and vocabulary which is appropriate, because many errors are found on these aspects.
