Abstract
This study is entitled “A Study on Conventional Metaphors in Lio Language in Ende Regency”. The topic is specified into two problems. The problem are formulated in questions: (1) What is the literal meaning of the conventional metaphors existing in Lio Language of Ende Regency?, (2) What is the metaphorical meaning of the conventional metaphors existing in Lio Language of Ende Regency?. The scope of the study is Semantics analysis but in this study, the writer only focus on linguistics features in the conventional language of Lionese people to find out the literal meaning and metaphorical meaning in Lio language. To inspire of the study, a number of previous related studies were reviewed. To easily understand, direct, and limit the discussion of the study, a number of basic concepts were defined. To analyze the data, the theory of Semantics focusing on metaphors was applied. The study was conducted in Fatamari village, Lio Timur subdistrict, Ende regency. The study was a qualitative study. The data were obtained directly from the informants, some guide questions about various conventional metaphors were used to interview the informants. The data obtained were analyzed through steps of transcribing Lio language that contains some literal metaphors into English, next identifying the metaphors that exist, then listing and translating the metaphors into English by gloss and the last is describing and analyzing the meaning of those metaphorical expressions. The result of the data analysis is informally described or verbally literal in general meaning, metahorical meaning in general . In line with the problem statement, there found many conventional metaphors used in Lio language; Tana Ka Watu Pesa ‘You will eat land and stone’, One lepa kai maga mina ‘His/her terrace of house is full of oil’ Ata fai wawi, ana lo’o lako ‘women are pigs and children are dogs’ Kai gharu rendu a’e apu ‘he/she shake dew there’. There are 12 metaphors in this study. They are used in everyday communication. The result shows in term of the identified metaphors, the writer found that in Lio language especially in everyday communication people usually used metaphors sentence. Based on the finding and conclussion some suggestions are offered, (1) The experts of linguistics and other related subjects are suggested to do continued study or similar study to confirm and extend the linguistics evidence in Lio language or other local languages. (2) The linguistic researchers are suggested to do a continued research on the Lio language especially conventional metaphors or a metaphors that is commonly used in everyday language.
