Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON SPEAKING ABILITY OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPK STA. THERESIA KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2018/2019”. It was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMPK Sta. Theresia Kupang in the School Year 2018/2019 able to speak English? (2) What is speaking ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK Sta. Theresia Kupang in the School Year 2018/2019? The objectives of the study are as the follows: (1) To find out whether the eighth grade students of SMPK Sta. Theresia Kupang able to speak English or not. (2) To find out the speaking ability level of the eighth grade Students SMPK Sta. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2018/2019. The study was conducted at the eighth grade students of SMPK Sta. Theresia Kupang. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPK Sta. Theresia Kupang in the School Year 2018/2019 (VIIIA). The total number of the grade eighth A was 20 students as the sample of this study. The collected data were analyzed based on the three aspects of speaking namely: Grammar, Vocabulary, and Pronunciation. The result of this study shows that: (1) The Eighth Students of SMPK Sta. Theresia Kupang were able to speak English. (2) The level of ability was classified as “High Advance” (13.9). There were no students who got 16 – 18 (Near Native). There were 15 students who got score 13 – 15 (High Advance), there were 5 students who got score 10 – 12 (Advance). And there was also no student who got score 7 – 9 (Intermediate), 4 – 6 (Elementary), and 1 – 3 (Beginner). These scores were given by using analytic method offered by Hughes. The first difficulty faced by the students was Grammar, the second was Vocabulary and the last was Pronunciation. Based on the result the writer suggested that Eighth Grade Students of SMPK Sta. Theresia Kupang should practice speaking especially speaking task with their friends, focusing on Grammar, Vocabulary, and Pronunciation aspects and kept up with their good performance, so, the fluency will not decrease and the English Teacher of SMPK Sta. Theresia Kupang, should give more attention to the students to improve their speaking by giving the students chance to speak English.
