Abstract

The study is entitled “A STUDY ON THE READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY OF THE EIGHT GRADE SUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 10 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2019/2020”. It was conducted to answer the following questions; (1) Are the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 able to comprehend the text they read? (2) What is the ability level of eight grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 in comprehending a reading text? (1) To find out whether or not the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang in school year 2019/2020 are able to comprehend the reading text. (2) To find out the ability level of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 in comprehending the reading text. This study is about reading comprehension ability of eight grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang especially class VIII K. The total number of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang was 345 students who were distributed into 11 classes. The writer chose class VIII K to be the sample of the study because based on the recommendation of the English teacher in the school; they had good understanding of English. The writer only chose 20 students from 31 students to be the sample of the study. In conducting the study the writer used Descriptive method. The writer chose those 20 students in which the writer prepared 5 texts and 30 items. The instrument used was a test through reading descriptive text. The students were given 90 minutes to read the texts and answer the questions. The result of the study shows that: (1) the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 especially class VIII K are able to comprehend the English texts. (2) The ability level of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 in comprehending the descriptive text was classified as “ fairly good ” (72,3%). There was no student who got the highest score 9.6-10 (excellent). There were 13 students who got fairly good level and 7 students who got average level. There was no student who got excellent, very good, below average, poor, very poor, bad, and very bad. The results suggest that both the teacher and the writer as a prospective teacher should pay attention to the teaching materials used including the English grammar, vocabulary, and also take problem in comprehending texts into consideration students’. The students at the researched school are strongly suggested to do independent study to gain more knowledge in English particularly to sharpen their reading skills.
