Abstract

This study is entitled “A LISTENING ABILITY STUDY OF THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMK KENCANA SAKTI KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2019/2020”. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Are the tenth grade students of SMK Kencana Sakti able to complete and fill the missing words when listening to the English song? (2) What is the ability level of the tenth grade students of SMK Kencana Sakti Kupang in completing and filling the missing words when listening to the English song ? The main objectives of this study are: (1) To find out whether the tenth grade students of SMK Kencana Sakti Kupang are able in completing and filling the missing words and answer the questions when listening to the song (2) To find out the ability of the tenth grade students of SMK Kencana Sakti Kupang in filling in the missing words and answer the questions when listening to the English song . Descriptive method was used to discribe the student’s ability level in listening. The subject of the study was the tenth grade students of SMK Kencana Sakti Kupang in the school year 2019/2020. While the number of the subject was 20 students. In collecting the data, the writer gave three songs. The songs were Love Yourself (popular song), Shallow (rare heard song), and Enough (rarest heard song). The result of the data analysis shows that the tenth grade students of SMK Kencana Sakti Kupang are able to fill the mising words and answer the questions when listening to the English songs. Their level of ability is “Average” (6.56). Besides, it can be seen that there were 2 students (10%) at good level, 10 students (50%) at fairly good level, 5 students (25%) at average level, 3 students (15%) at below average level. There was no student in excellent level, bad level, and very bad level. Based on the result above, the writer suggested that (1) The English teachers should be creative in teaching listening and they must balance all skills that they teach, not only paying attention to reading, but also to listening, speaking, and writing. The teacher should teach about vocabulary like homonyms, because the difficulties of listening dealing with sound of words/vocabularies (2) The students should increase their listening ability by listening to English monologs, conversations, broadcastings so they can learn more words/vocabularies.
