Abstract

This study is entitled: A STUDY ON THE USE OF MIND MAPPING STRATEGY TO IMPROVE STUDENT’S ABILITY ON DESCRIPTIVE WRITING OF THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA KRISTEN 1 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2020/2021. The study is conducted to answer the question: 1) Is Mind mapping effective or not in improving writing ability of the tenth grade students of SMA Kristen 1 Kupang? 2) how is mind mapping used to improve student’s writing ability? 3) what is the level of the writing ability of tenth garde students after being taught using mind mapping?. This study is focused in five aspects of speaking as proposed by Hughes in terms of content, organization, vocabulary, grammar and mecanich. In obtaining the data, the writer applied the mind mapping. All the students were the sample that used in choosing the respondents for this study. Actually there are 20 students in the tenth grade of IPA program. The instrument used in this study was pre test, classroom performance and post test. Based on the data analysis, the writer concludes that 1) mind mapping strategy is effective in teaching writing for the tenth grade students of SMA Kristen 1Kupang in the school year 2019/2020, 2)The pre-test was given after students had been taught writing descriptive text without applying mind mapping strategy and the post-test was given after they were taught writing descriptive text using mind mapping and there are significant differences in the results of teaching writing by using mind mapping and without mind mapping. 3) The class average score of pre-test was 38,25 clasified as very to poor level while in the post-test 1 the class average score was 56,2 clasified as fair to poor level and in pos-test 2 the class average score was 73,55 clasified as good-average level.Based on the result of the study the writer would like to offer some suggestions as follows: 1)To English teacher that teacher need to try to keep on applying the other strategy such as mind mapping strategy so that te students will be more motivated in learning English. During the research only used media such as pictures and hanndouts. The English teacher can use other media such as adobe flash so that the students will be more interested in the activity. The English teacher also should more serious in helpin students to improve their writing skills. 2)To the others researchers. This study is mainly itended to describe how the mind mapping strategy is implemented to improve student’s writing skill of grade tenth students of SMA KRISTEN 1 KUPANG. The other researcher follow up this study in different contexts in order to find more actions to improve student’s writing skill.
