Abstract

This thesis is entitled “An Analysis on Grammatical Error in Writing Narrative Text of the Second Semester Students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University in the Academic Year 2019/2020”. It was conducted to answer the following questions (1) What are the types of grammatical errors that occur in writing narrative text of the second semester students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University in the academic year 2019/2020? (2) What is the most common grammatical error made by the second semester students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University in the academic year 2019/2020 in writing narrative text? Based on the statement above, the objectives of the study were: (1) To find out the types of errors those occur in writing narrative text of the second semester students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University in the academic year 2019/2020. (2) To find out the most common grammatical errors made by the second semester students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University in the academic year 2019/2020. The subjects of this study were 10 students of second semester students of the English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University. The method applied in this study was descriptive method and the instrument used was writing task. The students were given chance to write narrative text based on their own topic. The taxonomy used by writer in analyzing the data was surface strategy taxonomy, consisting of omission, addition, misformation and misordering. The result of the analysis showed that the errors committed by the second semester students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University in the academic year 2019/2020 were misformation 49 (62.82%), addition 14 (17.94%), omission 9 (11.53%), misordering 5 (6.41%) and miscellaneous 1 (1.28%). The total numbers of error was 78. The most grammatical error made by students was misformation. Based on the result of this study, the following was the suggestion for: (1) For the Lecturer: the lecturer should teach the students how to write a good text especially in writing narrative text and give the students chance to practice. Therefore, the students should be focused on grammar especially in using tenses and subject verb agreement. (2) For the Students: the students should learn more how to choose the right words, correct sentence structure and focused on grammar especially tenses and subject agreement. Do more practice in writing in order to increase the skills of writing itself.
