Abstract

The title of this study is “A Study on the Ability in Using Demonstrative Pronouns in English Sentences of the Eight Grade Students of SMP Negeri 13 Kupang in the School Year 2015/2016”. This study was conducted in order to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMP N 13 Kupang able to use demonstrative pronouns in English sentences? (2) What is their ability level in using demonstrative pronouns in English sentences? (3) What are the most common mistakes encountered by the students in using demonstrative pronouns? The main objectives of the study are: (1) To find out and to know whether the eighth grade students of SMP N 13 Kupang are able to use demonstrative pronouns in English sentences correctly or not. (2) To find out their level of ability to use demonstrative pronouns in English sentences. (3) To find out the area of difficulties encountered by the students in using demonstrative pronoun. The research method used in this study was normative survey method or descriptive method. It is a method used to describe and analyze the ability of the eight grade students of SMP N 13 Kupang in school year 2015/2016. The subject of this study were 29 students of class VIII D.In gathering the data the writer used a test in the form of completion test with the total number of test item was 35.The result of the analysis shows that : (1) The eighth grade students of SMP N 13 Kupang are able to use demonstrative pronouns in English sentences. (2) The ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP N 13 Kupang was fairly good (63.6). (3) The area of difficulties in this study were the students have not been able to differentiate the use of demonstrative pronouns this, that, these, those in sentence. They were still confused about the use of singular demonstrative pronoun (this, that) and plural demonstrative pronoun (these, those). They are also confused about the distance of the object, there are “near” or “distant”. Based on the result of analysis, some suggestions are proposed to English teacher of SMP 13 Kupang. The English teacher should give more clearer and simple explanation about number of objects (singular or plural) so the students will understand more about it. The teacher should also give exercises in using demonstrative pronouns in real situation, in order to improve the students‟ understanding and ability in using demonstrative pronoun.
