Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON THE ABILITY IN WRITING COMPOSITION BASED ON PICTURE OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 13 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2015/2016. This study was conducted in order to the following questions. (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 13 Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 able to write composition based on guiding pictures provided? (2) What is the level of ability? (3) What are the area difficulties faced by the students in writing a composition based on guiding pictures?There are some objectives of the study.as follow:: (1) To find out and to know whether or not the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 13 Kupang are able to write a composition based on pictures. (2) To find and to know students’ level of ability in writing a composition based on the guiding pictures? (3) To find out and know difficulties of students in writing a composition based on the guiding pictures.The method applied in this study was descriptive method and the instrument used in gathering the data was a descriptive writing writen by the students.The writer chose students which consisted of 15 students as a sample of this research. The result of the study showed that the eight grade students of the SMPN 13 Kupang are able to write composition based on the pictures.The common mistakes or errors committed by the eight grade of SMP Negeri 13 Kupang are on grammar and patterns of the sentences, the item vocabulary choice, mechanics( word spelling, punctuation), fluency ( style and ease of communication) and form (organization of ideas).Data analysis,correcting the student’s composition based on grammar, vocabulary, mechanics, fluency, and form, scoring the students composition,calkulating the score compositions,level of ability of SMPN 13 Kupang and reporting the result in the form of thessis writing of SMPN 13 Kupang.Based on the result of the study, the following suggestion is given to the English teacher need to pay attention to the proper use of grammar, the choice proper vocabulary, mechanics, spelling and capitalization by given more task and time to improve their ability to write a composition.
