Abstract

This study is entitled “AN ANALYSIS ON GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN TRANSLATION OF DESCRIPTIVE TEXT FROM INDONESIAN INTO ENGLISH OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 16 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2016/2017 ” It aims at answering the following questions.1)What are the kinds of grammatical errors occurring in the translation of the eighth grade students of SMPN 16 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017? 2) What is the most frequent kind of grammatical errors occurring in the translation of the eighth grade students of SMPN 16 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017? The study was conducted in order to find out; 1) The following things to find out kinds of grammatical errors occurring in translation made by the eighth grade students of SMPN 16 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017. 2) To find out the most frequent grammatical errors occurring in the translation made by the eighth grade students of SMPN 16 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017, the writer used descriptive qualitative method to find out kinds of grammatical errors and the most frequent errors made by eleven grade student of SMPN 16 Kupang and the writer classified and analyzed the errors based on the surface strategy taxonomy.This study was conducted at eighth grade students of SMPN 16 Kupang in the school year of 2016/2017. In this study the writer chose class 8H. There were 20 students taken randomly from grade eighth as the sample of the study. The writer used writing test to obtain the data. The result of the analysis show that the grammatical errors committed by the eighth grade students of SMPN 16 Kupang in writing a descriptive text are misformation, omission, addition, misordering. However, the number of errors made by each student varies in types and numbers.the grammatical errors made by the students were misformation 24 errors (25,53%), omission 55 errors (58,51%), addition 9 errors (9,57%) errors, misordering 6 errors (6,39%) errors. The most frequent errors commited by the eighth grade students of SMPN 16 kupang in writing a descriptive text was Omission. The grammatical errors committed by the eighth grade of SMPN 16 Kupang are related to the use of tenses and verb. Based on the result of research, the suggestions are as follows: 1) The teacher should teach the students how to write a text and given the students chance the practices. The practices should be focused on grammar especially in using tenses , verb, noun, conjunction, possesive, pronoun, adjective, preposition. 2). The students should learn how to write a text focusing on grammar especially in using tenses and the meaning of vocabulary.
