Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON THE ABILITY IN WRITING RECOUNT TEXT OF THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 5 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2015/2016”. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: 1.are the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang able to write a recount text by using the correct structure,and correct grammar of recount text? 2. what is the ability level of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in writing a recount text? 3.what are the problems faced by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in writing a recount text? Whereas the objective of the study are as follows: 1) to find out whether or not the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang able to write a good recount text by using the correct structure and correct grammar of recount text. 2) to know the ability level of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in writing a recount text. 3) to find out the problems faced by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in writing a recount text. The method used in this study was descriptive. The writer only took 10 students. The aim of this method is to explain a situation which is observed while this research is done. The study was conducted at SMA Negeri 5 Kupang. In this study, the writer took the students from class A as the subject of this study. The total number of students is 30 but 10 of them were absent. They were chosen randomly. The collected data were analyzed on five aspects of writing, they are grammar, vocabulary, Mechanics, Fluency, and form. The result of this study shows that (1) the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang are able to write a recount text. (2The ability level of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in writing a recount text is classified as “Average” (19.2). (3) The areas of difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the School Year 2015/2016 in their writing of recount were grammar, vocabulary, mechanics, fluency, and form. But, the most difficult area of writing was in vocabulary. It can be seen from the result of the study, the student ability level of each element, as follows. The grand score of grammar is 40 and the average is 4. The grand score of vocabulary is 34 and the average is 3.4. The grand score of mechanics is 39 and the average is 3.9. The grand score of fluency is 39 and the average is 3.9. The grand score of form is 40 and the average is 4. These scores were given by using analytic method offered by John Anderson. Therefore the writer suggests the English teacher of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang to give more attention on the teaching of grammar especially simple past tense, preposition, article and the use of pronoun and give explanation to the students about the generic structure in writing recount text. And especially for students’ vocabulary, the teacher should give them more exercises and asking them to memorize it everyday.
