Abstract

This study is entitled: “A Study on the Ability in Using Simple Past Tense of the Eight Grade Students of SMPN 3 Kupang in the School Year 2016/2017”. It was conducted to answer the following questions. (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMPN 3 Kupang able to use simple past tense in sentences? (2) What is the ability level of the students in using the simple past tense in sentences? The objectives of the study are as follows. (1) To find out whether or not the eighth year student of SMPN 3 Kupang are able to use simple past tense in sentences. (2) To find out the level of the students ability in using the ability in using the simple past tense in sentences. The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of this method is to give or explain a situation which is observed while this research is done. The subject of this study was the eight grade students of SMPN 3 Kupang (class VIII A). The total number of the students class VIII A was 32 as the sample of this study. The instrument used in this study was Multiple Choice Test. After analyzing the data, the result of the study shows the following facts. (1) The eighth grade students of SMPN 3 Kupang were able to use simple past tense. (2) The level of ability was classified as “VERY GOOD” (85.9). Based on the distribution of the students ability in simple past tense it can be seen that 8 (25%) students were in excellent level, 16 (50) students got very good level of ability, 8 (25%) students got good level of ability, and there is no students got fairly good, average, below average, poor, very poor, bad, very bad level of ability. Based on the result of the study above, the writer suggested the teacher of English at the researched school should take the result of this study as the consideration in planning his/her teaching process so that students are assisted to learn grammar and the students are expected to learn grammar especially tenses in order to help them to use English accurately.
