Abstract

This study is entitled “A Grammatical Errors Analysis in Writing Recount Text of the Eighth Grade Students of SMP N 1 Kupang in the School Year 2017/2018”. It was conducted in order to answer the following questions: (1) What types of errors that are made by the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 in writing a recount text? (2) What is the most common error made by the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 in writing recount text? The objectives of the study are as follows. (1) To identify and classify the types of errors that are made by the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Kupang in writing recount text. (2) To find out the most common errors made by the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Kupang in writing recount text. The method used in this study was descriptive method. In collecting the data the writer chose class VIII of SMPN 1 Kupang with The total of all students are 693 students from 21 classes. The writer chose class VIII O of SMPN 1 Kupang as the sample. That class consists of 30 students. However, the writer only chose 10 as the samples. The writer asked them to write a recount text from the topic given about their experience in the past. The result of this study showed that the kind of grammatical error commited by the students were misformation, misordering, omission, and addition. Based on the result of the analysis, the most frequent grammatical errors made by the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Kupang in writing recount text were misformation (62.37 %) with the total of 63 errors made by 10 students, addition (20.7 %) with the total of 21 errors made by 9 students, omission (11.8 %) with the total of 12 errors made by 7 students, and the last is misordering (4.9 %) with the total of 5 errors made by 5 studetns. Based on the result of the data analysis, the writer would like to purpose some suggetions to the English teacher of SMPN 1 Kupang to give more attention on grammatical aspect especially in using simple past tense, pronoun, preposition, and subject verb agreement because the students are stil lack of knowledge and skill in these parts. For the students, the students should practice English more intensely especially in those parts of lack, and try to use dictionary to make them know about English vocabulary.
