Abstract

This study is entitled “A Study on The Use of Scanning Technique to Improve Reading Comprehension of The Tenth Grade Students of SMK Negeri 2 Kupang in The School year 2018/2019”. The problems of this study are (1)Is the use of scanning technique effective to improve the reading comprehension of tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019?, (2) How is scanning technique used to improve the reading comprehension of the tenth grade students of SMKN 2 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019?, (3) What is the students’ reading comprehension level after being taught using scanning technique?. The objectives of the study are (1) To find out whether or not the use of scanning technique is effective to improve reading comprehension of the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019, (2) To find out how scanning technique used to improve the reading comprehension of the tenth grade students of SMKN 2 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019, (3) To find out the students reading comprehension level after being taught using scanning technique. Based on the research the writer makes some conclusion as follows: (1)The use of scanning technique is effective to improve students reading comprehension. It was proved on their results in post test 1 in cycle one and post test 2 in cycle two. In post test 1 the total score is 2810 and the average is 82.64 the category of post test 1 is good because only 30 students were able to pass the test. In post test 2, the total score is 3070 and the average is 90.29 the category of post test 2 is very good because 34 students were able to pass the test. The average from post test 1 have increase in the average of post test 2. So the writer conclude that scanning technique was effective to improve students reading skill. Then the writer would answer the second question: (2).Scanning technique was elaborate into two cycles.. After they had done, the writer asked them to submit the task and start to discussed about the students opinion after using scanning technique in reading. Then the writer would answer the third question: (3) After the students were taught using scanning technique, the writer saw that the students literal comprehension level is very good. It is proven also when they easily understood the content of the story in the text. By looking at the result obtained, the writer may conclude that scanning technique is effective to improve students reading comprehension of the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 and can be applied in teaching and learning process. The writer suggest to the English teacher especially to improve students reading comprehension, teachers can use scanning technique as the alternative in learning strategy. Because the result of this study shows that there is a posistive effect of using a scanning technique to improve students reading comprehension. The students are suggested to use the scanning technique to improve their reading comprehension because scanning technique is very useful to help the students in improving reading comprehension. Finally, because the writer will become an educator and since the study showed a positive result, he dedicated to continue scanning technique and necessary adjustment in his professional career as a teacher later on and share it with others especially his future students.
