Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY OF THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 16 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2017/2018.” It was conducted to answer the following questions; (1) Are the students of the seventh grade of SMPN 16 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 able to comprehend English texts? (2) What is the level of ability on reading comprehension of the seventh grade students of SMPN 16 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018? While the objectives of the study are (1) To find out if the students of seventh grade of SMPN 16 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 is able to comprehend English texts. (2) To find out the level of reading comprehension ability of the seventh grade students of SMPN 16 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018. This study is about reading comprehension of the seventh grade students OF SMPN 16 Kupang especially class VII B. The total numbers of the eighth grade students of SMPN 16 were 282 students which consist into 9 classes. The writer chose class VII B to be the sample of the study because based on the recommendation of the English teacher in the school; they have good understanding of English. The writer chose 25 students from 32 students. The writer used random sampling as the way to choose the students in which the writer prepared 32 pieces of paper, 25 of them were written TRUE and 7 papers were written FALSE. Students who got the papers of TRUE became the sample of this study. The instrument used in this study was multiplechoice. The result of this study shows that (1) the seventh grade students of SMPN 16 Kupang especially class VII B are able to comprehend English texts. (2) The level of ability was classified as “AVERAGE” (5.7). There was no student who got the highest score 9.6-10 (Excellent). There were 3 students (12%) got very good level, 12 students (4%) got fairly good level, 4 students (16%) got average level, 6 students (24%) got below average students. There were no students who god excellent, poor, very poor, bed, very bad. Therefore the writer suggests that the English teacher should motivate the student study more English, especially in reading comprehending of the English test. They can try to do more exercises in English reading text.
