Abstract

This research was conducted based on the problems found in the process of learning activities. The problems of this study are:1) Is talking stick strategy effective to improve speaking ability of the seventh grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018? 2) How is talking stick strategy used to improve speaking ability of the seventh grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018? 3) What is the speaking ability level of the seventh grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 after being taught by using talking stick strategy? The purposes of this study are: 1) To find out whether talking stick strategy effective to improve speaking ability of the seventh grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018. 2) To describe how talking stick strategy is used to improve speaking ability of the seventh grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018. 3) To find out speaking ability level of the seventh grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 after being taught by using talking stick strategy. The subject of this study is the sevnth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the School year 2017/2018.This study belongs to the Classroom Action Research (CAR) based on the model offered by Kemmis and McTaggart and were conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research instruments used in this study were lesson plans, pre-test, cycle I post test, cycle II post test, the transcription students’ product, and observation sheet. The pre test result was very low and categorized as “bellow averager”, in which the average score was 2,34% or only 11 students of the subject was able to pass the test. The result of cycle I indicated improvement but still below the standard of achievement and categorized as “average”. The average post test score was 3,39% or only 18 students of the subject was able to pass the test. While the result of cycle II showed that the average of the post test score increased to 4,78% or 30 students of the subject was able to pass the testand categorized as “Very good”.Based on the result it can be concluded that (1). The use of talking stick strategy improves speaking ability of the seventh grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the School year 2017/2018. (2). This study was conducted in two cycles and each cycles consist of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. This study focused on the use of talking stick strategy to improve students’ speaking ability. (3).The level of the students’ speaking ability after being taught by using talking stick strategy was 4,78% categorized as “very good”. Therefore, Talking Stick Strategy is recommended to be used by English Teachers, especially to teach speaking at Junior High School because by using this strategy the students are motivated and have high confident to speak up and the learning becomes enjoyble. Beside that, the students should improve their English achievement especially in mastering speaking skill using talking stick strategy because this strategy is useful to stimulate them to practice to speak English. Finally, because the writer will xi become an educator and since this study showed a positive result she decided to continue to use Talking Stick Strategy with any necessary adjustment in her professional career as a teacher later on and shares it with others especially her future students.
