Abstract

This study is entitled “ A STUDY ON READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY OF THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 5 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2018/2019.” It was conducted to answer the following questions; (1) Are the students of the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 able to comprehend English texts? (2) What is the level of ability on reading comprehension of seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019? While the objectives of the study are (1) to find out if the students of the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 are able to comprehend English texts. (2) to find out the level of reading comprehension ability of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019. This study is about reading comprehension of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang especially class VII B. The total numbers of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang were 282 students who were distributed into 9 classes. The writer chose class VII B to be the sample of the study because based on the recommendation of the English teacher in the school; they have good understanding of English. The writer only chose 25 students to be sample of the study. The writer used random sampling as the way to choose those 25 students in which the writer prepared 35 pieces of paper where 25 papers were written true and 7 papers false. Students who got a paper of true became the subject of this study. The instrument used in this study was multiple choice. The result of this study shows that (1) The seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang especially class VII B are able to comprehend the English texts. (2) The level of ability was classified as “AVERAGE” (5.7). There was no student who got the highest score 9.6-10 (excellent). There were 3 students (12%) got very good level, 12 students (4%) got fairly good level, 4 students (16%) got average level, 6 students (24%) got below average students. There was no student who got excellent, poor, very poor, bad, very bad. Therefore the writer suggests that the English teacher should motivate the students to study more English, especially in reading English texts. For the students they can try to do more exercises in English reading text. The writer is prospective teacher in preparing herself to become a teacher in the future.
