Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON THE ABILITY IN WRITING PROCEDURE TEXT OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 16 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2017/2018”. It was conducted to answer the following questions; (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMPN 16 Kupang able to write a procedure text? (2) What is the ability level of eighth grade students of SMPN 16 Kupang in writing procedure text? The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of this method is to give or explain a situation which is observed while this research is done. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPN 16 Kupang (class VIII B). The total number of class VIII B was 30 students but the writer only chose 15 students randomly as the sample of this study. The instrument used in this study was writing task (write a procedure text). The collected data were analyzed on three aspects of writing namely: grammar, vocabulary, and form. The result of this study shows that (1)The eighth grade students of SMPN 16 Kupang are able to write procedure text. (2)The level of ability was classified as “FAIR” (8.6). there is no students who gets the highest score 16-18 (excellent). There are 4 students (20%) who get the score 10 – 12 (Good). There are 9 students (70%) who get score 7-9 (fair). There are 2 student (10%) who gets score 4-6 (poor), and there is no student who gets score 1- 3 (very poor) . These scores were achieved by using analytic method offered by John Anderson. There were many errors made by the students, they are Grammar or word form, followed by vocabulary, spelling and punctuation. Therefore the writer suggests that the English teacher should motivate the students to practice writing easily, understand grammatical rules and read more English text in order to learn and understand how to make something done in writing procedure text.
