Abstract
This study is entitled “AN ANALYSIS ON GRAMMATICAL ERROS IN TRANSLATION OF DESCRIPTIVE TEXT FROM INDONESIAN INTO ENGLISH OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 10 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2018/2019” It aims at aswering the following questions. 1) What are the kinds of grammatical errors occurring in the translation of the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019?2) What is the most frequent kind of grammatical errors occurring in the translation of the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019? The study was conducted in order to find out; 1) The following things to find out kinds of grammatical errors occurring in the translation made by the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019. 2) To find out the most frequent grammatical errors occurring in the translation made by the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019. The writer used descriptive qualitative method to find out kinds of grammatical errors and the most frequenterrors made by eighth grade student of SMPN 10 Kupang and the writer classified and analyzed the errors based on themodifiedsurface strategy taxonomy. This study was conducted at eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year of 2018/2019. In this study the writer chose class 8A. The writer used writing test to obtain the data. The result of the analysis show that the grammatical errors committed by the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in writing a descriptive text are misformation, omission, addition, misordering, and miscellaneous. However, the number of errors made by each student varies in types and numbers. The grammatical errors made by the students were misformation 255 errors (51.30%), ommision 107 errors (21.52%), addition 59 errors (11.87%), misordering 67 errors (13.48%), miscellaneous 19 errors (3.82%). The most frequent errors committed by the eighth grade students of SMP10 Kupang translating a descriptive text was Misformation. The grammatical errors committed by the eighth grade of SMPN 10 Kupang are related the the use of tenses and verb. Based on theresult ofthe study,the suggestions areasfollows: 1) The teacher should teach the students how to translate a text and given the students chance to practice. The practices should be focused on grammar especially in using tenses, verb, noun,conjunction, possesive pronoun, adjective,andpreposition. 2) The students should learn how to translate a text focusing on grammar especially in using tenses and the meaning of vocabulary.
