Abstract

This study is entitled “A study on the Ability in Using Direct and Indirect Speeches of the Tenth Grade Students of SMAK Sint Carolus Penfui Kupang in the School Year 2017/2018”. It was conducted in order to answer the following questions. (1) Are the tenth-grade students of SMAK Sint Carolus Penfui Kupang in able to use direct and indirect speeches? (2) What is the ability level of the tenthgrade students of SMAK Sint Carolus Penfui Kupang in using direct and indirect speeches? The study conducted in SMAK Sint Carolus Penfui Kupang, is a quantitative study. The data were obtained through test. For this reason, a test was prepared in a written form. The obtained data were analyzed through step of correcting, scoring, and tabulating the students answer sheets. The result of the data analysis is presented formally in tables and informally in the verbal description. The subjects of this study are 20 students of the tenth grade students of SMAK Sint Carolus Penfui Kupang. The activity of analyzing the data goes to some finding as the conclusion of this study. (1) The total score for the test is 4, 95. It is classified as BELOW AVERAGE based on the standard of measurement applied. Therefore, the tenth-grade students of SMAK SINT CAROLUS PENFUI Kupang is considered not able to use direct and indirect speeches. (2) The ability level of the tenth-grade students of SMAK Sint Carolus Penfui Kupang in using direct and indirect speeches by the students are BELOW AVERAGE. The tenth grade students of SMAK Sint Carolus Penfui Kupang are still lacked of English grammar in general and the grammar of direct and indirect speeches in particular and vocabulary as well. Based on the finding and conclusion some suggestion are offered to the writer himself, the teachers of English, the students studying English, and other researches, in line with their role, responsibility, and capability. The writer, as the English teacher to be is suggested to learn much English grammar in general and direct and indirect speeches in particular and the way to teach them. The students are suggested to learn English grammar in general of direct and indirect speeches in particular. The teachers of English, especially those teaching at SMAK Sint Carolus penfui Kupang are suggested to give more exercises in using direct and indirect speeches to the student.
