Abstract

This research entitled “Expressions of Verbal Emotions in Manggaraian Language” it is intended to answer the question, what are linguistic expressions of verbal emotions in Manggaraian language? What are the semantic forms of the expressions of verbal emotions in Manggaraian language?, The objective of the study is useful for both the academic world and the practical life of society, especially the speakers of Manggaraian language. To analyse data, the theory of linguistics especially language in interaction was applied. The data were obtained through elicitation sentences. For the elicitation sentences are a number of sentences were prepared in written form to elicit the data from the participants. This study has been conducted find out of the expressions of verbal emotions in Manggaraian language and the semantic forms of the expressions of verbal emotions in Manggaraian language. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from the three participants. The instruments that the writer used in this research were list of elicitations sentences, free interview, pen and notebook. The result shows from the data that has been analyzed, it is very clear that there are several expressions of verbal emotion that are often used in Manggaraian language. One example is in expressing angry emotions; Rua ngai pucu daku (You make me angry), sad expression; De ba’eng laing (What a pity!), happy expression; Nisang de’it nai daku (My heart is very happy), fear expression; Raos ngai wulu wekig (Ouch...my body hairs gooseboomps), disgust expression; Ole bapa/gomeng diha hio a (How greedy he is) and surprise expression; Olee Mori campee (Oh God help me. Please!). The use of each emotion is of course in accordance with the situations and contained lexical meaning and grammatical meaning. Those semantics elements resulted in denotation meaning, connotation meaning, referential meaning, intransitive meaning, and progressive meaning. In line with the significance and finding of the study some suggestions are proposed. (1) The experts of linguistics and other related subjects are suggested to do a continued study or similar study to confirm and extend the linguistic evidence of expression of verbal emotions in Manggaraian language. (2) Other researchers are suggested to conduct other researches focusing on other linguistics areas such as phonology. (3) Manggaraian language is one of the local languages that must be taught to young generation as a way of preservation. Moreover the Manggaraian native speakers should be proud speaking their language because it is very interesting and challenging to study.
