Abstract

The present study is entitled “An Analysis of Request Expressions in Manggarai Language”. This study was conducted to find out request expressions used in Manggarai language and to find out gender matter in the use of request expressions in Manggarai language. This present study only focuses on requests expression used in Manggarai language based on daily situation. The method of this study was the qualitative method and the technique of the data collection was through a questionnaire distributed to a few participants who were native or L1 speakers of Manggarai. The data also was collected through a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) containing 10 request situations. The participants of the study were students of Widya Mandira Catholic University and students of Nusa Cendana University which consist of 5 Manggaraian males and 5 Manggaraian females, aged 23-26. The participants were from East Manggarai Regency which was purposely selected. They were all native speakers of Manggarai language who lived in Kupang. To establish and discuss the forms of requests expressions in Manggarai language, this study used the classification of request patterns proposed in the Cross-Cultural Study of Speech Act Realization Pattern (CCSARP) proposed by Blum-Kulka et al.’s (1989). The findings of this research show that the most request expressions used by the Manggaraian participants were conventional indirect request which totals to 52 times, followed by direct to 48 times, and the least favoured one was non-conventional indirect request to 21 times. Furthermore, the query preparatory was the most frequently used request expression by males, while the most dominant strategy for females was mood derivable. Judging from these results, it can be concluded that, in this present study, the male Manggaraian participants made more requests by using of conventional indirect expressions, while the Manggaraian female participants produced more of direct requests expressions.
