Abstract

The quality of salt produced by Indonesian salt farmers is generally not reach the standard of the quality of industrial salt and even consumption required by the Badan Standarisasi Nasional. People's salt can be utilized as industrial and consumption salt by increasing its purity. The purpose of this study was to find out impurities are contained in the coarse salt produced by the people of O'lio Village and their percentage and the effect of adding a precipitating agent has on the purity of the salt. Purification was carried out by precipitation method with the precipitating materials used were Na2CO3, NaOH and BaCl2. The mass of the added precipitating agent is adjusted to the stoichiometric ratio of the impurity mass. The results showed that the concentration of insoluble impurities in pond salt was 14.34 % and in boiled salt was 10.53 %. The concentration of calcium in the pond salt and boiled salt samples were 1.44 % and 1,00 %. The magnesium levels in the pond salt samples and boiled salt samples were 2.16 % and 1.50 % respectively. The sulfate content in each sample of boiled salt and pond salt was 0.10 %. The addition of impurities binders increased the concentration of NaCl in pond salt from 82.81 % to 93.56 % and in boiled salt from 85.94 % to 94.73 %.
