Abstract

This study is entitled "A Study On the Ability in Using Gerund of the Eleventh Grade Students of Smak Sint Carolus Kupang in The School Year 2017/2018". This study was conducted in order to answer the following questions (1) Are the eleventh grade students of SMAK Sint Carolus Kupang in the school year of 2017/2018 able to use gerund correctly? (2) What is the ability level of the eleventh grade students of SMAK Sint Carolus Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 in using gerund? The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative method because he presented the data collected in words rather than numbers. The instrument used in this study was a test consisting of multiple choice test and translation. The total number of test items were 40 items i.e. 25 multiple choice tests and 15 translation tests and time allocation is one hour. The subject of the study was the eleventh grade students of SMAK Sint Carolus Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 with the total number of 30 students. Based on the data analysis he could state that the eleventh grade students of SMAK Sint Carolus Kupang were able to use gerund and level of their ability was (6.0) which is classified as average. The writer also proposed suggestion that it might be useful for the English Teacher event thought the ability was average. The English Teacher should pay more attention in teaching structure or grammar especially gerunds as subject, object and object of preposition, and then for the students Since many students found difficult in translation the sentences by using gerund, it is very advisable for the students to learn grammar and general gerund in particular. They are also expected to develop their stock of vocabulary
