Abstract

This research is entitled "Code-Switching in speaking English on the Eighth Grade Students". This study focuses on the types of code-switching, functions of code-switching,. The purpose of this research is to find out the types of code switching, function of code switching, done by Eighth Grade Students of SMPN Satu Atap Nuapu in presentation. The method used iwas descriptive qualitative. To obtain the data, the writer used transcripts and interview. Coding and labeling of each data sample was utilized according to potential type. All the codes would be screened and the data labeled with similar codes would be presentation together. Code of similar nature then would be classified in major categories to suggest the types and functions of code-switching. The result of the classification of the types and function would be used to find out the types and functions of code switching. In group presentation, there are 39 utterances which were found by researcher. And from 39 uttereances there are 18 types of code switching: tag switching, inter-sentential code switching, and intra-sentential code switching found in the group presentation. Besides, there are 3 functions are found in group presentation: expressive function, referential function, and phatic function. Students used tag switching only for phatic function and they used intersentential for referential and phatic function. They also used intra-sentential code switching for referential function and expressive function.
