Abstract

The lack of use of English in an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) environment causes foreign language learners to experience several difficulties. The aim of this research is to develop students' interest in learning. For this reason, the research investigates what strategies are used by EFL learners in giving praise and what are the structures of using praise in giving praise. This research data was obtained through a questionnaire in the form of a Google form, which was distributed to 17 foreign language (EFL) learners online and through direct interviews with 5 people. The participants were students from the English Department class of 2019, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Widya Mandira Catholic University. The results of this study show that there are various structures and strategies used when foreign language learners give compliments to friends in English. Based on the questionnaire data and direct interviews obtained, it can be concluded that the strategies most frequently used in EFL are: Explicit 134: 78.82%, implicit 0:0%, Explanation 7: 4.11%, Information Question 10: 5.88% , Future reference 5: 2.94%, contrast 1: 0.58%, Suggestion 7: 4.11%, request 2: 1.17%, non-praise 1: 0.58, opt-out 3: 1, 76% and the structure that EFL students often use in giving praise is Noun Phrase + is/look + (really) + Adjective. However, EFL students tend to often use 8 structures and do not use not + Noun Phrase + Adjective! Structure. They use: NP is/looks (really) ADJ, I (really) like/love NP PRO is (really) (a) ADJ NP ,You V (a) (really) ADJ NP ,You V(NP) (really) ADJ NP ,You have (a) (really) ADJ NP! , What ( ADJ NP..The structure that EFL students do not use when giving praise is + Noun Phrase + Adjective. Based on the results of the interview, it is clarified that the reason why EFL students do not use it is because there will be misunderstandings when giving praise using negative sentences first. Moreover, The friend who receives the compliment will be confused and not clearly understand the compliment being given.it can be concluded that EFL students are more likely to use explicit strategies compared to the implicit and structured strategies used by EFL students, namely NP is/looks (really) ADJ and those that are not used, namely Isn't NP ADJ
