Abstract

This Study Was Conducted In Order To Answer The Following Questions: (1) Are The Eighth Grade Students Of Smp Negeri 1 Kupang Able To Comprehend The Text They Read? (2) What Is The Level Of Their Ability? The Main Objectives Of This Study Are To Find Out Wheter The Students Of Smp Negeri 1 Kupang Able To Understand The Text They Have Read Or Not And To Measure And To Know The Students Ability Level Of Smp Negeri 1 Kupang. Descriptive Method Was Applied To Describe The Student’s Ability Level In Reading Narrative Text. The Subject Of This Study Was The Eighth Grade Students Of Smp Negeri 1 Kupang In The School Year 2018/2019. The Total Students Were 405 Students. The Writer Took Only Class Viii I Which Consisted Of 25 Students To Be The Subject Of This Study. For The Test The Writer Prepared A Narrative Text To Read. The Type Of This Test Was Multiple Choices. The Result Of The Study Shows That (1) The Eighth Grade Students Of Smp Negeri 1 Kupang Were Not Able To Comprehend The Text That They Have Read. (2) Their Ability Level Is “Below Average” With The Total Scores 4.608. Based On The Result Of The Study, The Writer Gives Suggestions To The English Teacher At Smp Negeri 1 Kupang Shouldgive More Explanation And Exercises In Form Multiple Choice Tests. And For The Students Must Keep Studying By Reading Various Types Of English Read In Order To Enrich Their Reading Comprehension As Well As Pay More Attention And Do More Exercises On Narrative Text. The Practice Can Be Done In The Classrooms Or At Home By Doing Homework So Their Level Of Ability Can Be Better.
