Abstract

This research is entitled "Title: English Teacher Strategies to Teach Speaking to Passive Students in an EFL Classroom". Research Question: What are the strategies of English teachers in teaching speaking to passive students in the EFL classroom? Objective: To identify strategies employed by English teachers to engage passive students in speaking activities within an EFL classroom. This study utilized a descriptive qualitative method. The instruments used were observations and interviews. Observations were conducted in the classroom while the English teacher was teaching, followed by interviews with the teacher to discuss the strategies used in teaching speaking to students in the EFL classroom. The results the research found that English teachers at SMPK Adisucipto employ the following strategies to engage passive students: Role Play, Discussion, Picture description. The study also revealed that these strategies successfully transformed passive students into active participants in speaking activities in the EFL classroom. The strategies used by English teachers are effective in engaging passive students, making them more active in speaking activities.
