Abstract

This study is about “Using HelloTalk Application to Improve English Pronunciation of EFL Students”. It aims to find out How HelloTalk application is used in teaching pronunciation to the EFL students and How the EFL students’ pronunciation is improved after being taught using the HelloTalk application. The subject of the study was based on the students’ problems with English pronunciation in the 10th-grade Beauty Major 2 at SMK Negeri 3 Kupang, and the participants were 10 students. The design of this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR); it was conducted over three meetings in two cycles. In collecting data, the researcher used observation, pre-test, and post-test. The data obtained were in the form of observation sheets that had been given a checklist, and voice note transcripts from the students’ voices when they told their experiences. The actions implemented involved using the HelloTalk application in the teaching and learning activities of English pronunciation. There was interaction between students and a native English speaker in the HelloTalk group. The first action, the pre-test was provided to measure the students’ competency in English pronunciation whereas the second action, the students joined the HelloTalk group and the third action, a post-test was administered to the students after they utilized the HelloTalk application. The research results showed that the students’ English pronunciation abilities were low in the pre-test. Most of them could not pronounce English words correctly, resulting in a pass percentage of only 10%. When compared with the post- test result, the students’ English pronunciation more increased after they learned English pronunciation with a native speaker on the HelloTalk. All of the students or 100% passed their last tests. They were able to gain great scores. In conclusion, the HelloTalk application had proven to be an effective learning media for assisting the students in improving their English pronunciation. Based on the findings of this study, it is suggested that the use of the HelloTalk application as a language learning tool could be further explored by other researchers. Some areas that could be investigated include: Examining how the HelloTalk application can be effectively integrated into the formal English language teaching curriculum and its impact on classroom learning; Investigating the effects of HelloTalk on students with different levels of English proficiency, from beginners to advanced learners; and Studying the long-term effects of using HelloTalk on students' English pronunciation, including whether the improvements achieved are sustained over a longer period. Additionally, English teachers can establish a lively learning atmosphere to overcome learners' lack of interest in learning. Keywords: HelloTalk application, English pronunciation problems, and EFL students.
