Abstract

It was conducted to answer the following questions; (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMPK.STA.FAMILIA KUPANG able to write a descriptive text? (2) What is the level of their ability? (3)What are the difficulties found by the eighth students of SMPK.STA.FAMILIA KUPANG in writing descriptive text ?. The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of this method is to describe the condition in research field. The use of descriptive method in the research is to describe the real fact of the students ability in writing a descriptive text. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPK.STA. FAMILIA KUPANG (class VIIIA). The total number of students in class VIIIA was 27, but the writer only chose 20 students randomly as the sample of this study. The instrument used in this study was writing test. The collected data were analyzed on five aspects of writing, namely; grammar, vocabulary, mechanics, fluency and form. The result of this study shows that the eight grade students of SMPK.STA.FAMILIA KUPANG are able to write a descriptive text with the level of ability was classified as “AVERAGE” (17.7). There is no students who get the highest score 30 (excellent) and 25 – 29 (very good). There are 4 students (20%) who get score 20 – 24 (good) and there are 16 students (80%) who get 15 – 19 (average) and there is no student who get score 10 – 14 (below average) and 5 – 9 (bad). These scores were given by using analytic method offered by Jhon Anderson. There were many errors made by the students, they are grammar especially the used of simple present tense, choice of word, spelling and punctuation. Therefore, the writer suggests the teacher of SMPK.STA.FAMILIA KUPANG to pay more attention on the teaching of grammar especially the use of simple present tense in writing descriptive text, choice of word, punctuation and spelling.
