Abstract

This research is entitled "Using Skimming Technique to Increase Students' Reading Ability of Grade VIII Students of SMPN 6 KUPANG Tengah in the school year 2023/2024 ”. The aim of this research is to find out the answer to questions 1. How are students' reading ability improving after being taught using skimming technique of students grade VIII of SMPN 6 Kupang Tengah? 2. What are the areas of difficulties faced by the students when they are skimming?. This research aims to know students' reading ability after being taught using skimming technique of students grade VIII of SMPN 6 Kupang Tengah and to identify the difficulties students faced when they studied grade VIII of SMPN 6 Kupang Tengah. This research employed quantitative and qualitative. The instruments used in this research were pre-test and post-test and interview students. The findings of this research show that students in class VIIIA of SMP Negeri 6 Kupang Tengah for the 2023/2024 academic year were able to skim the text given to them so they were able to answer questions well. The average percentage of students' skimming ability is 74.2, which means their ability is classified as "Fairly Good". The difficulties faced by students in skimming were: the text had many new words or sentences that they were unfamiliar to, also some of them did not understand the instructions and questions. The allocated time was very unsufficient for them. Teachers must teach students how to skim texts correctly. Tell them how to read the text with the correct technique. Teachers should also give students some texts to read as practice in continuous skimming.
