Abstract

O uwi is a song and dance that occurs during the traditional reba (harvest thanksgiving) ceremony in Beja Village. Uwi in the Ngada community has a special meaning because uwi is a symbol, the focus of attention or the core of the celebration of the Reba traditional ceremony. This research starts from the opinion of the younger generation who say that folk songs are backward songs and for some people they don't know the lyrics and their meaning. The main problem in this research is the symbolic meaning of the traditional o uwi song in the reba traditional ritual in the Beja traditional village, Bajawa sub-district, Ngada Regency. This research has two problem formulations, the first is to understand the process of the reba traditional ceremony in the Beja traditional village community, Bajawa District, Ngada Regency, the second is to identify the symbolic meaning of the o uwi song in the reba traditional ceremony. The approach in this research is qualitative with ethnographic methods and data collection from observations, interviews and documentation. The subject of this research is mosalaki who has knowledge of reba and o uwi singing. This research stage includes informants, interviews and documentation. The results of the research reveal that each poem in the o uwi song contains symbolic elements that describe historical meaning, brotherhood, peace, moral values, cultural values and religious values. The traditional reba ceremony consists of the stages of bui, misa reba, kobhe dheke, kobhe dhoi, and kobhe su'i and the o uwi singing has stages starting from kelo ghae, wuku uwi and then o uwi singing. It can be concluded that the reba and o uwi singing are not held directly but go through stages in them and the o uwi singing has a symbolic meaning in it where this meaning is very influential in the daily life of the Beja people.
