Abstract

This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kupang able to fill in the missing words when listening to the English song? (2) What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kupang in fill in the missing words when listening to the English song? The objectives of the study are: (1) To know whether the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kupang able to fill in the missing words when listening to the English song. (2) To know the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kupang in filling in the missing words when listening to the English song. Descriptive method was used to describe the students’ ability level in listening. The subject of the study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019. While the number of the subject was 18 students. In collecting the data, the writer gave two songs. The songs were You are the Reason and In Case You didn’t Know.The result of the test shows that the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 are able to fill in the missing words when listening to the song and their level of ability is “Good” (7.82). Besides, it can be seen that, there are 1 student (5%) at excellent level, 8 students (44%) at very good level, 2 students (11%) at good level,4 students (22%) at fairly good level, 1 student (5%) at average level, 1 student (5%) at below average level, and also 1 student (5%) at very bad level. There were no students in poor level, and very poor level. Based on the result above, the writer could suggest the following things (1) The English teachers should be creative in teaching listening and they must balance all skills that they teach, not only paying attention to reading. But also to listening, speaking, and writing (based on the writer observation). The teacher should teach about vocabulary like homonyms, because the difficulties of listening dealing with sound of words/vocabularies (2) The students can increase their listening ability by listening to English monologs, conversation, broadcastings so they can learn more words/vocabularies.
