Abstract

This study was conducted to answer the following questions:(1) Are the seventh grade students of SMPK Sta. Familia Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 able to use the preposition of time in English sentence correctly or not?(2)What is the ability level of the seventh grade students of SMPK Sta. Familia Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 in using preposition of time? (3) What is the most difficult preposition of time found by the seventh grade students of SMPK Sta. Familia Kupang in the school year 2018/2019? The objectives of the study are (1) To know whether the seventh grade students of SMPK Sta. Familia Sikumana Kupang are able to use thepreposition of time in sentence or not. (2) To know their level of ability in using preposition of time and (3) To know difficult preposition of time found by the seventh grade students of SMPK Sta. Familia Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 in using preposition of time in English sentences. The method used in conducting the study was normative survey method. This method was used for describing the ability of the students in using preposition of time. There were 86 students and divided three classes. Class A consisted of 30 students, class B consisted of 26 and class C consisted 30 students. So, the writer chose class B as the subject of the study. To obtain the needed data the writer used a test. The test consisted of two parts, part 1 was multiple choice test:30 items and part 2 was filling in blanks test: 10 item. The total test item was 40. Based on the result of the analysis the writer could conclude that the seventh grade students of SMPK. Sta Familia Sikumana Kupang were not able to use the preposition of time correctly. It can be seen through the student’s grade for the whole test that is 40%. This figure can be classified as “poor”. So the students’ level of ability is poor (40%). The most difficult preposition of time is since. Considering this condition the writer would like to suggest that the English teacher should do remedial teaching for the following preposition of time : on, in, at, for, by, since, during, until, before and after because many students found them difficult to use those prepositions properly. The students should learn more prepositions of time.
