Abstract
Springs are groundwater that comes out of the soil by itself to the surface of the soil and plays an important role in human life. One way to keep springs sustainable is with local wisdom. Local wisdom is a social capital developed by the community to create order and balance between the socio-cultural life of the community and the preservation of the surrounding natural resources. The purpose of this study is to find out the condition of springs and local wisdom of the community in several villages of West Amarasi sub-district in preserving springs. The research was carried out on spring water sources in five villages of West Amarasi sub-district, namely Toobaun, Teunbaun, Soba, Merbaun, and Niukbaun villages. The research was conducted in March – April 2024. Data collection used semi-structured interview methods, field notes, observations, documentation, and literature studies involving 117 respondents. The collected data is then analyzed descriptively which is displayed in the form of a table. The results of the study show that the springs in the five villages are springs that have existed for a long time and have been inherited from generation to generation. The spring water supports the needs of the community such as washing, bathing, clean water needs, and livestock. The condition of the spring can be said to be good, because it is overgrown with quite a lot of plants, coconut, areca nut, hazelnut, and other plants. The form of planting these types of plants is one of the local wisdom known as mamar. In addition, another form of local wisdom is to install a prohibition board placed in the spring area that reads "no washing of vehicles", "no taking water from the spring for sale (Tengki)". If violated, they will be sanctioned in accordance with the norms that exist in the community, cutting livestock as an offering for the preservation of the spring, and always holding a joint prayer in the spring area every year on October 31 on Marten Luther's Day.
