Abstract

This study is entitled “A Study on Reading Comprehension Ability of Eighth Grade Students of SMPK Sancta Familia Kupang in the School Year 2015/2016.”. It aims to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMPK Familia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 able to understand text they have read? (2) What is the level of ability of the eighth grade students of SMPK Familia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 in understanding the text they have read? (3) What are the areas of difficulties of the eight grade students of SMPK Familia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 in understanding the text they have read? The objectives of the study are: (1) to find out whether the eighth grade students of SMPK Familia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 are able to comprehend the reading text (2) to find out level the of ability of the eighth grade students of SMPK Familia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 in comprehending the reading text. (3) to find out the areas of difficulties faced by the eighth grade students of SMPK Familia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 in comprehending the reading text. For this study, the writer used a descriptive method. This was used because this method was suitable for analyzing the data (students’ answer sheets). The subjects of the study were the eighth grade students of SMPK Familia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016. The result of the study shows that (1) the eighth grade students of SMPK Familia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 are able to comprehend reading text. The average of their grade is 65.05. (2) Based on the standard of measurement used in this study, the level of ability of the eighth grade students of SMPK Familia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 is Average (3) Most of them made errors in with grammar and spelling particularly. The grammatical problem faced was in simple past form. For example, in answering the question: Were the children happy when they finally met their mother in the river? The students answered Yes, they were the answer should be No, they were not happy. The spelling problem in writing the answers of the comprehension questions was thripiple (student number 15).Based on the result of the study the writer would like to suggest that the English teachers of SMPK Familia Kupang should give more practice to the students. It can be done by providing various reading texts which should be comprehended by students either in class or at home. They should also help them to master the grammar and vocabulary that can help them to comprehend reading text. Further, for the students who have below average and poor ability, the writer suggests the teachers should pay more attention to them in comprehending reading text in particular and learning English in general.
